DERRY City skipper Peter Hutton may have played his last game of the season.
The captain has been struggling all season with a hernia problem and travels to Belfast today (Wednesday) for a scan, which will determine if he regards surgery.
"I'm having a scan on my hernia this afternoon, I'm hoping that we'll be able to treat
it until the end of the season and then go in for an operation, but we have to wait and see what the scan shows up.
"If I need an operation at this stage of the season, it would effectively rule me out for the rest of the season, but we'll wait and see."
The veteran defender's news comes hot on the heels that Ciaran Martyn is likely to be missing for the next few weeks, after damaging his ankle ligaments during Monday night's 2-0 League Cup semi-final success at Galway United.
The Candystripes travel to bottom club Cobh Ramblers this Saturday and boss Stephen Kenny will be expecting his players to get back on track in the league and fight for that all important third spot, which will guarantee European football next season.
Last week the Brandywell men dropped five points behind Cork City, following their disappointing 1-0 defeat to Shamrock Rovers.
For Derry, they did show great bouncebackability at lowly Galway United on Monday evening, when they booked their fourth League Cup final in a row, thanks to goals from Sammy Morrow and Niall McGinn.
Kenny made no less than nine changes to his side that lost to Rovers, for their semi-final clash at Terryland Park and the likes of Darren Quigley, Eddie McCallion, Sean Hargan, Barry Molloy and Morrow certainly did themselves no harm in their quest to hold down a regular first team spot.
Nevertheless the win and the performance means that the City manager certainly has a selection headache for this Saturday's clash at St Colman's Park and that's something Hutton feels is good for the club.
"Competition for places is exactly what you want particularly if you want to be successful, you need to have a big squad," said the veteran centre-back.
"We are entering a crucial part of the season, with the FAI Cup in a few weeks time, then the Setanta Sports Cup restarts shortly and we now have the League Cup Final to look forward to again.
"Cobh are fighting for their lives and they have a small tight pitch, so we know it's going to be difficult. They are big physical side who are dangerous from set-pieces.
"However we are playing well at the minute and need to concentrate on our own game."
