LONDONDERRY'S very own basketball club North Star will be holding their fifth annual summer camp and it promises to be the best to date.
The camp will be running from 18th - 22nd August in St Columbs College and St Josephs High School and is for boys and girls aged 7-18. No matter whether they are complete beginners or have some experience of the game everyone is welcome.
The North S
tar summer camp is based upon the American model of sports camps and as such is slightly different to most of the other sports camps seen across the city. The North Star camp runs for five full days from 9.30am to 4.30pm.
This year they have former Sport Northern Ireland Youth Coach of the year Gavin Garland coming in to be the head coach of the camp. There will also be coaches from America who are in Ireland as part of the Peace Players International Programme and Kirsty McMurray a level two coach from England.
In the morning sessions coaches will teach the children the basics of the game and break them down with simple drills and skill sessions. Then after lunch there will be different types of games where they can apply the skills they have learned. There will be one versus one, three versus three, and a full five versus five league, which will run throughout the week with finals being held on the Friday.
There will also be skills competitions, shooting competitions and spot prizes for players of all abilities. North Star would like to thank St Columbs College and St Josephs High School for their continued support as and use of facilites for the camp.
If anyone would like to apply for a place at the camp the application forms can be downloaded from the website at www.NorthStarBasketball.com or you can contact the club using this email address derrybasketball@hotmail.com or telephone (0775) 239 5052.
