IT was a weekend of mixed fortunes for local athletes.
Success at Saturday's McConnell Shield cross country in Ballyclare and medals but not gold coloured on Sunday, in Stranorlar at the Ulster Juvenile and Novice Championships.
City of Derry Spartans men squad were successful in retaining the McConnell
Shield team trophy on a muddy Ballyclare course on Saturday.
Led home by the Roberts brothers Colin and Greg in seventh and eigth places and backed up by Emmet McGinty 12th and Ciaran Hurley 18th the red vests saw off a strong challenge from Willowfield Harriers and Ballymena & Antrim AC.
Earlier Aileen Morrison had finished second behind former Northern Ireland senior champion Suzanne McCormick of Lagan Valley AC in the Women's race. Back in the mens five miler there were age group wins for Colin Roberts (M35), Declan McCarthy (M45) and Gerry Lynch (M60) with an eye catching run by Kevin Carlin in 20th spot in a very competitive field.
Sunday in Stranorlar proved somewhat less productive as despite a determined effort the club's novice mens squad failed to go three in a row for the championship team title. The quartet of Declan Reed (2nd), Eamon Colhoun (5th), Gerry Dudd (16th) and Declan Burns (20th) did however claim team silver behind North West rivals Letterkenny but in front of Finn Valley AC.
Declan Reed had a race long battle with Letterkenny runner James McFadden and only lost out in a desperate sprint to the finish line after both men strained every nerve and sinew for supremacy over the 6K distance, run in sticky underfoot conditions.
In the women's 3.5K championship the female red vests made a brace bid for medals but in a very tight team race they finished just off the podium in fourth spot behind Finn Valley AC, Dromore AC and Innishowen AC.
Marina Campbell made an auspicious debut in the red vest with a great run for seventh leading home Jacqueline McMonagle eigth and Bernie Ryan ninth as the Spartans scoring trio.
Unfortunately this was not enough to break into the medal positions but the squad will take heart from this performance.
Finally at Stranorlar there were two team girls under 15 and boys under 17 squads in the provincial under age championships. This qualifies both squads for the All Ireland next month in Cavan.
Clare Shaw, Anna Barr, Tamara Boyle and Amy Jackson were the under 15 team scorers while at under 17 level it was John Paul Williamson, Ruairi Heaney, David Lynch and Kevin McCauley who brought home the bronze for the boys.
Meanwhile seven of City of Derry runners are in Swansea this weekend, representing Northern Ireland in the annual Home Countries Masters cross country meeting.
Jacqueline McMonagle (F40) and Bernie Ryan (F45) hope to benefit from their Stranorlar run while Declan McCarthy, Dermot Connolly and Gerry Duddy will run in the M45 grade.
Sammy McAnaney ran in Ballyclare and will contest the M50 category. Gerry Lynch goes in the M60 age group.
