THE wait is finally over and Derry City fans aren't the only ones looking forward to this Friday night's opening league game of the season at UCD, boss Stephen Kenny is delighted things are finally getting underway
.
After a whirl wind year the Dubliner is back at the Brandywell and although he hasn't set any targets he is optimistic that the Candystripes have a good year.
"Our target is to win a few matches, starting at UCD on Friday, then Linfield in the
Setanta Cup on the Monday, before taking on Finn Harps, at the Brandywell, the following Friday," said Kenny.
"I have been delighted with the way pre-season has gone, we had some really good performances in pre-season, the training and effort has been good and things are starting to take shape, but on Friday night against Dundalk we were a little bit flat.
"We won six games in pre-season, but you get nothing for that and the flat performance against Dundalk is good for the players.
"Because we were absolutely flying against Newry City and the players were buzzing after that match, but the Dundalk game will bring us down to earth and maybe it will concentrate the mind on what we need to do this Friday against UCD."
Having lost the likes of David Forde, Ken Oman, Gary Beckett, Shaun Holmes, Killian Brennan and Stephen O'Flynn, City have added the likes of Conor Salmon, Stephen Gray, Clive Delaney, Darren Quigley, Gerard Doherty and Niall McGinn to their squad and the former Dunfermline Athletic manager admits he still hasn't decided his starting eleven for their trip to Dublin.
"I think there are still places up for grabs and I couldn't say that we had a certain first 11 at the moment.
"Hopefully after treatment this week, the likes of Kevin Deery, Ciaran Martyn (hip), Paddy McCourt (calf) and Mark Farren will be OK for the UCD game."
One man who is missing the trip to Belfield Bowl is right-back Eddie McCallion, who serves a one match suspension.
Kenny admitted that Friday night's 3-2 win over Dundalk wasn't the best performance he has ever witnessed at the Brandywell.
"If I'm completely honest it wasn't the best of performances and I was a bit disappointed by it, but you can be too critical because whenever you consider we have eight new players in the squad and we have played six pre-season games and won the six of them, then it's not too bad.
"I was delighted after the Newry City game last Tuesday night because we had a good high technical performance and I was delighted with that but against Dundalk, that wasn't very evident.
"However the only thing that was noticeable against Dundalk, was the quality of the goals we scored.
"Clive Delaney scoring on his debut was a really good goal, as was Gareth McGlynn and the third goal to win the match from Barry Molloy, was a great move, with seven or eight passes, however overall I'm pleased with the way pre-season has gone and can't wait for the season to get underway this Friday at UCD," concluded Kenny.
