WATERSIDE man Daryl Gurney can't wait to throw at this year's Six Nations Darts Tournament, which takes place at Hastings Everglades Hotel, this weekend.
The international competition will see players from England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Holland all congregate in Londonderry once again on Saturday and Sunday and the 21 year old is excited at competing in front of his family and friends.
"It's a home tournament and there is already some buzz," he said.
"Playing in a major competition in my home town is great and I can't wait."
Gurney, who only recently returned to the oche after picking up a hand injury, narrowly lost to Martin Adams in the Scottish Open at the weekend.
"I hurt my hand after the World Championships and the Scottish Open was the first competition I threw at; I felt I did alright but lost to Martin again, this time at the semi-final stage.
"Thankfully now my hand is fine and that's why I played the competition in Scotland to make sure I'll be right for this weekend."
The 22-year-old feels he and his Irish team-mates have a chance of winning the Six Nations Darts Tournament, but he also admits that England are big favourites.
"Although we have lost Mark Webster and Gary Anderson to the PDC, there are still top players Dutch coming over but I think the team to beat will be England.
"They have Martin Adams, Darryl Fitton, who won the Dutch Open recently, Tony O'Shea, won the Scottish Open last weekend, and Martin Atkins so they are favourites by a long way.
"We have a good enough team to win it, but it all depends how we can perform against the professionals like Martin Adams and Tony O'Shea on the big stage."
Tommy McCarter, Secretary (Area 6 of Northern Ireland Darts Organisation) said: "This leading sporting event is great news for dart players and fans alike. The last time this event was hosted in the city by Area 6 was in 2002.
"The Six Nations will bring top quality professional darts players to compete against each in our own back yard.
"I am particularly delighted that our very own Daryl Gurney will be competing in this major sporting event as he has just recently returned from the World Championship tournament which took place in the Lakeside in January 2009."
