A INSTITUTE board meeting tonight (Wednesday) is expected to rubber stamp the appointment of John Gregg as their new boss.
The Coleraine man, who replaced Liam Beckett only six weeks ago, told the board on Saturday that he wanted the job on a permanent basis and is relishing pitting his wits against the big boys next season.
Gregg feels if he can keep the majority of th
is season's squad and possibly add one or two faces then they won't be a bad side.
"I told them I would love to get a crack with that group of players in the invitational league, but that's not up to me.
"There is a lot more to come from a lot of the players but they need to expect to become better players they have to be harder on themselves.
"It can't always be me and Raymond McGuinness being hard on them, they have to be hard on themselves because that's how you become a good player.
"We have a lot of young players at the club who can become good players, but whenever they aren't playing well they have to give themselves a shake and drive on. If we can get that type of mentality into them we would be a far better side and if I'm working here next season, that's something I'll be looking to drum into them.
"I feel we are possibly about three players away from having not a bad Irish League team."
In his best Kevin Keegan-like impression, Gregg admitted facing the likes of David Jeffrey, Alan McDonald and Ronnie McFall on a regular basis is something he's relishing already.
"To be honest it's a waiting game now," vowed Gregg.
"Personally I would love to get the job but my future will be decided by both myself and the club, but I'm not setting a time scale on it.
"I'm not being big headed or over-confident but I know the players want to work with me and I want to work with them.
"The best thing about the invitational league is that if we do get into it no one will give us a chance and I would love to prove the doubters wrong."
