SPRINTER Jason Smyth and hurdler Tom Carey contributed significantly to the Irish Senior squad's successful attempt for promotion in the European League in Slovakia at the weekend.
The Eglinton man sprinted to a new 100 metres personal best of 10.51 seconds and in the process posted new national under 23 record figures.
Smyth also ran in the 4 x 100 relay squad and Carey finished third in the 400 metre hurdles with 52.8 second
s and for good measure turned out later in the 4 x 400 relay as the City of Derry boys made their presence felt.
Strabane track club's promising young javelin thrower Aaron Crawford was also on the Irish squad.
Tonight (Wednesday) the action switches to the road and race five in the Furey Insurances 5K Series.
Carndonagh is this evening's venue, a first time for the Inishowen town, and the start time is 7.30pm.
Entries will be taken from 6.15pm at the community school and the flat course starts there and finishes in the Diamond.
As ever in the series some exciting racing is on the cards with both the up front and down the field battles sure to entertain.
Meanwhile the City of Derry juveniles had a very successful weekend outing at Antrim in the age group provincial track/field championships bringing home a total of 30 medals – 14 gold, 10 silver and six bronze – across the whole range of events staged over the two days.
