THE North West will continue to have representation in the top flight of Irish League football as Institute last night (Tuesday, 13 May) dramatically claimed the final berth in the 12 strong invitational Premier Division.
The new set up sees the reduction of the top flight reduced by four teams.
Buoyed by their inclusion club representatives say it will provide a catalyst for greater financial input.
Speaking about 'Stutes inclusion in the revamped league format, Cl
ub Chairman Billy Gillard said the news was fantastic for both the Waterside and Londonderry as a whole.
"The work we put in was massive and there is more to come," he said.
Stating that the decision to include Institute was exactly right, Gillard said: "My gripe all year was that TV cameras were not coming over the Glenshane to cover north west clubs. This will change now meaning more coverage and more sponsorship."
Another 'Stute stalwart who has greatly helped the development of the Riverside Stadium also hailed the move as a great event for the city.
Robert Ferris said: "It is marvellous to see this. We now have three sides of this stadium covered with stands, where once we had a rope around the pitch to block it off."
Mr Ferris said the news will be a great boost to the clubs fans and will encourage many more people to get involved at Drumahoe. He also praised the hard work and deication of all those who give their time at the club in an atmosphere that is community based and far removed from the ethos of a public limited company. Robert Ferris also thanked major sponsor, Billy Henderson for his contribution to 'Stute in recent years.
"Even last night people were out working on the ground making sure it is tip top shape for August," Robert Ferris said.
However, the final drafting of the invitational league has not been without a great deal of controversy.
Institute pipped Belfast-based Donegal Celtic for the final spot. Clubs were assessed on league performances, attendances, facilities and provision for women's and youth football. These are areas in which Institute have made vital upgrades on in recent seasons.
Limavady United and Armagh City's applications were not considered because they did not have the required UEFA licence. Portadown also failed to make the new league. Controversy also surrounds the inclusion of First Division club Bangor, the only team outside the top flight to manage inclusion.
