CITY of Derry disposed of Boyne Rugby Club from Drogheda in emphatic fashion at Judges Road on Saturday last to qualify for the Semi Final of the All Ireland Junior Cup.
City of Derry 45
Boyne 5

Boyne came to Derry lying in second position in the Leinster Junior league with a number of high scoring victories gained over the last few weeks having scored tries for fun with a highly rated back line.
City of Derry s
cored early and never looked in any danger of losing in a highly entertaining sporting game that saw both side attack at every opportunity.
Derry had not played any rugby since the end of last month when they defeated Seapoint, the top team in Leinster this season in the last round of this AIB Junior Cup. There was no fear that the break from competitive rugby would have been an obstacle as right form the kick-off Derry got into their stride and repeated their return to form last shown against Seapoint.
The Derry pack were hungry for action with their back row prominent Karl Gemmell at No8 and wing forwards Stephen Simms and Chris Cooper were winning ball on the ground and linking with their backs to some effect. Ten minutes were gone when inter play between the Derry forwards allowed Chris Cooper to make a thirty meter break and find hooker Sam McAuley in support to score a good team try, Richard McCarter added the conversion. Boyne came straight back at Derry and out half Brian Collins released Brendan Duffy on the half way line and he showed blistering pace and only a last ditch tackle by Derry full back Peter Henderson stopped a certain score. Duffy spilled the ball forward and from the five meter scrum thirty seven year old Ian O'Reilly charged down the attempted clearance to score a try in the corner to bring Boyne right back into the game.
Boyne gained confidence from their score and they had a period of prolonged pressure inside the Derry 22 metre line, Collins had a penalty attempt hit a post. Boyne had a number of five meter scrums and drives at the Derry line but Props David Witherow and Sam Duffy along with Sam McAuley were magnificent and eventually turned over possession and cleared their lines. The game turned in Derry's favor on thirty five minutes, firstly from a line out 20 meters out a clean catch and drive with Captain Bob McKillop and Brian Prue to the fore allowed Sam McAuey to complete his brace of try's. Form the kick-off Derry drove forward and were awarded a penalty thirty meters out Andrew Semple took a quick tap and made ground before feeding Richard McCarter who with a deft pass sent centre Ryan Campbell in to score a try converted by McCarter himself to give his team a 19ots to 5pts half time lead.
City of Derry had the breeze in their backs in the second half and with McCarter and Henderson kicking beautifully Boyne were struggling to get out of their own half. Derry pressure on fifteen minutes at a five meter scrum produced the platform for No 8 Karl Gemmell to pickup and go blind he offloaded to Man of the Match Peter Henderson for a try converted by McCarter. Two minutes later good play by Gemmell and McKillop in midfield gave McCarter the time to pick out Henderson entering the line at pace to score from forty meters out, McCarter converted. The game was now over as a contest and Derry unloaded their bench. David Houston had come on made some impression with his high fielding and running play, on thirty minutes he made a break from the half way line and passed to winger Josh Lewis who took play on before passing inside for McCarter to complete the scoring with a try which he converted himself.
Derry Backs Coach Terry McMaster said after the game "I was pleased with our performance today. We came back to form against Seapoint last time out and we moved our level of play up a few notches out there. The backs are getting to know one another's play as the season progresses and we can only get better.
"The forwards worked hard and produced some quality possession and with Andrew Semple and Richard McCarter at half back improving their understanding with every game all bodes well for the rest of the season."
The semi-final draw for the AIB Junior Cup was made on Sunday morning and City of Derry will have to travel to either Cashel from Tipperary or Monivea from Galway whose quarter-final game on Saturday was cancelled due to weather conditions.
