LIMAVADY SDLP Alderman Gerry Mullan has issued a plea for people to be particularly vigilant in the period leading up to Christmas and not to make it easy for thieves and burglars to remove them of their hard earned cash and valuables.
Referring to a number of recent burglaries in the Borough, which have struck fear and anger into the heart of the community he said: "In my opinion burglary is a heinous crime which, in most cases, not only causes the victim to suffer serious financi
al loss but also leaves them much more deeply scarred than any physical attack possibly could.
"I am very fearful that these recent incidents may be only the start of a much larger campaign of similar criminal activity that is likely to happen over the Christmas period.
"It is vital that all possible precautions are taken to try and thwart the activities of these despicable individuals and that we check regularly on our elderly neighbours and anyone we may consider to be vulnerable at this time."
Commenting on other ways that people can best protect themselves from such attacks Mr Mullan went on to say: "Anyone who feels vulnerable should make contact immediately with the local crime prevention officer at Limavady PSNI station who will provide them with sound advice in this regard.
"If necessary, I am also happy to call with anyone in need of help and assistance "
In conclusion he said: "I would appeal to anyone who has any information in respect of the recent burglaries which may lead to the apprehension of those involved to contact the PSNI immediately.
"It is important to remember that by helping to solve even just one of these crimes that many more such crimes could be prevented."
A police spokeswoman said detectives in Limavady are investigating two burglaries in the Aghanloo Road and Lilac Avenue area on Sunday, November 16.
