FOUR groups from the Limavady Borough district are sharing in a lottery windfall announced by Awards For All.
The National Lottery's small grants scheme is awarding almost £25,000 to the local organisations as part of a grants rollout of £808,996 to 113 groups across Northern Ireland.
The four local groups are: Largy Community Group; Limavady High School, N
orth West Lifelong Learning Association and the Kevin Lynch Hurling Club.
Largy Community Group, between Limavady and Dungiven, is receiving almost £9,000 towards its work in the area.
The group, which operates from its own community hall in the village, organises events and activities to suit all ages.
Local resident Janice Mellon, a special needs teacher, said: "The group has been running since 1996 and I got involved when I saw the need for resources and amenities in a rural area, especially at a time when resources are being cut back.
"We try to have something for everyone and this award will make all the difference as it means we'll be able to organise an arts programme for the coming season.
"A group like ours and the events we host – both recreational and educational – is vital in a rural area where it can be difficult for people to access courses and classes because of public transport issues, for instance.
"It also provides an important social focus for people who might otherwise feel quite isolated because of their geographical or personal circumstances."
Limavady High School works to improve the education and development of young people aged 11-18 and their Lottery grant of £3,000 will be used to create a cross community garden in the local cemetery.
North West Lifelong Learning Association, based in Limavady is an organisation which aims to promote and encourage ICT training for people of all ages in the area.
The Lottery grant of £9,480 will be used to deliver classes to educate young people, parents, grandparents and children in the use of on-line chat rooms.
Kevin Lynch's Hurling Club promotes the sport of hurling in the Dungiven area and they will receive a grant of £6,345 which will be used to continue the club's development by providing coaching education courses and the purchase of additional equipment.
