DOLE queues in Limavady could stretch to over 1000 by Christmas time following the long-anticipated closure of Seagate Technology in October.
Last month Limavady posted the second worst jobless levels in Northern Ireland outside the two principal cities. A Department of Enterprise Trade and Investment (DETI) Labour Market Report for the area, taking account of those claiming the dole here
up until September 30, showed that 3.7 per cent of the working population in Limavady were reliant on social security payments.
Only Strabane, where five per cent of the working population were forced to claim the dole, had a more dismal record, when Derry and Belfast were excluded.
The September statistic reflected a total of 809 people signing on the dole in Limavady during that month.
The latest jobless figures for the Borough, contained in November's Labour Market Report, are due for publication within a week.
It is unlikely that this month's statistical release will be timely enough to take into consideration the hundreds of job losses at Seagate Technology, which officially took effect at the end of October.
However, the latest report is likely to make further grim reading for Limavady, whilst the final monthly report for 2008 due in mid-December, will demonstrate a massive spike in dole queues and could push the number of claimants over the 1000 mark.
