AN IRISH Language Development plan has been submitted to Limavady Borough Council by the District's incumbent officer.
The plan proposes a drive to increase the number of adults and children speaking the Irish language in the community.
In order to boost adult usage it is proposed night classes be organised in Magilligan, Limavady and Greysteel, where currently ther
e is no provision. Development of a relationship with An Carn Centre in South Derry and Comber House near Claudy is also proposed.
Amongst the methods of promoting the language amongst children of primary age is a plan to use Cumain Gaelacha/A Level students to promote outreach activities in feeder primary schools.
The promotion of "Seachtain na Gaeilge" activities and the development of a group of adult volunteers to promote Irish in schools across the district as used in St Mary's PS, Altinure, are also suggested.
In reference to Irish-medium schools the plan aims: "To lessen the effects of lack of supporting community infrastructure and resources and resulting isolation on staff and pupils, to promote good practise regarding development of a linguistic community, to increase the number of speakers of Irish in the community."
In the community sector the plan suggests a strengthening of weak infrastructure in conjunction with Glór na nGael - with specific target areas identified as Limavady, Magilligan and Greysteel. It also proposes the development of an access/information point for the Irish Language in North Derry similar to the An Carn model.
The promotion of local Heritage and Tourism Development is also tied in. It is suggested the Council develop and support local projects, which celebrate and inform local people of the wealth of local heritage including myth and legend, natural and built heritage, linguistic and musical tradition.
Examples given in the plan are, Ó hAmsaigh, Ó Ceallaigh, traditions relating to early saints and tribal groups, songs and story from the Benedy Glen, minor placeman collection project with local schools.
