THE REGIONAL Development Minister has given the green light to multi million pound plans for the main Limavady to Londonderry Road.
Work is now expected to get underway on the the £46million A2 Broadbridge Maydown to City of Derry Airport Dual Carriageway scheme early next year.
The scheme will provide 6.6 kilometres of dual carriageway from Maydown Roundabout to the City of Der
ry Airport. And the roadway will be welcomed in Limavady as it will shorten travelling times to Londonderry.
Regional Development Minister Conor Murphy said developing the road as part of the Northern Key Transport Corridor connecting Belfast to Derry via Coleraine, was essential to economic regeneration of the region.
"I welcome the benefits to road users with the provision of a new all purpose dual carriageway.
"This will help to accommodate increasing traffic flows, resulting in reduced journey times and making the road a safer and more attractive route for east/west traffic on the A2.
"This improvement will in turn contribute towards the continued economic development of the north and efforts to improve road safety."
The minister has tasked Roads Service with progressing the scheme. The plans follow an inspector's report arising from public inquiries held to consider the A2 Broadbridge scheme.
It is understood the inspectorate's recommended amendments require the vesting of land in the area.
Anyone wishing to view the inspector's report and the A2 plans can do so at the offices of Derry City Council, 98 Strand Road, Derry BT48 7NN and Northwest Development Office, Orchard House, 40 Foyle Street, Derry BT48 6AR.
