SINN Féin in Limavady have dismissed an apology from UUC Councillor Leslie Cubitt after he said a Dungiven Community Hall "should be bombed" at a Limavady council meeting last week as derisory and falling far from the minimum required.
Councillor Paddy Butcher of Sinn Féin retorted that "for Cllr Cubitt to dismiss the comment as a joke to "wind up Sinn Féin" is unacceptable. His motivation was blatantly sectarian"
Mr Butcher said: "If I made a statement like that or one of my Sinn
Féin colleagues did, we would have been arrested for incitement, its no laughing matter. On the night Councillor Cubitt made two further outrageous allegations which demand a retraction and an unqualified public apology.
"He stated that the management committee of the Dungiven Hall had amassed "huge debts" which would now "be returned to council". I have the greatest respect for that committee some of whom are also involved in community groups in the area. Over the years they have secured hundreds of thousands of pounds of funding for the voluntary and sporting community in Dungiven. To suggest or imply a slur on their financial integrity and honesty is just not acceptable.
"I interrupted the meeting on a point of order and insisted that the DUP chairperson formally recorded that Sinn Féin wanted to be disassociated from the remarks. Councillor Cubitt has not heard the last of this.
"Finally he called into question the competence of Chief Executive Officer Liam Flanagan. This allegation was repeated several times."
He concluded. "Councillor Cubitt has overstepped the mark this time and he must take responsibility for his actions. A mea culpa is not good enough. Sinn Féin are demanding a mea maxima culpa."
