Ulster Day in Donegal

ULSTER Day will be celebrated on September 29, commemorating the Ulster Solemn League and Covenant and Women’s Declaration which was signed in 1912 by 400,000 people. But what do we really know about it?

As part of their Good Relations strategy, Derry City Council’s Community Relations section are running a one day information event on Friday, September 28, which will incorporate a visit to the Donegal County Museum in Letterkenny to visit the Ulster Covenant Exhibition and ‘Walking the Colours’ exhibition.

Council’s Community Relations Officer Julia Kee said: “This event has been organised to support initiatives which respond to the legacy of the past in ways which assist today’s society to remember, commemorate, reflect and move forward into a shared society.

“The daylong event will also incorporate a visit to the St Johnston Orange Hall which will host ‘The Home Place’, a play by celebrated local playwright Jonathon Burgess. This will be followed by a facilitated workshop and discussion.”

Participants will be collected at Lisnagelvin Leisure Centre at 9.30am on Friday, September 28 and taken by coach to the event, returning to the Centre again by 4:15pm. Registration is free and to book your place contact laura.gibson@derrycity.gov.uk or Julia.kee@derrycity.gov.uk, tel: (028) 71365151.
