In a statement on Monday afternoon, a PSNI officer confirmed that a 26-year-old Eastern European woman was currently receiving treatment for a range of injuries following allegations of rape and assault.

They said she was also being assessed as a potential victim of human trafficking.

Investigating officer Detective Inspector Mark Bell, from PSNI Human Trafficking Unit, said: “A woman asked police at Strand Road for assistance last night and our enquiries led us to arrest a 28-year-old man a short time later.

“These enquiries, including a search of a property in the city, are continuing as we work with partner agencies to ensure the woman receives all appropriate support and assistance.”
