Driver disqualified for one day

A judge has said that insurance law is '˜heavily weighted in favour of the insurer and not the insured person'.

District Judge Barney McElholm said: “quite frankly this is wrong and I am trying to think what I can do about it.”

The judge made the comment as Alan David McCay (32), of Rosskeen Park pleaded guilty to having no insurance on February 25. The court heard McCay was insured by a company which withdrew cover in Northern Ireland, but Mr McCay was not notified by the company and thought he was insured when police stopped him.

Mr McCay was given an absolute discharge and was disqualified from driving for one day.
