A vote for Devenney is a vote for honest representation

Devenney, flanked by his supporters, handed in his nomination on Friday afternoon.

Speaking afterwards, Mr Henry said Devenney was a “realistic alternative to the politics of the past” and would appeal to disillusioned voters and those who felt disenfranchised and unrepresented, and he said he wanted to encourage people not to waste their vote.

“I have known Maurice since he came into politics over 11 years ago,” Mr Henry said.

“I have always found him to be an honest and hard working councillor and have no doubt he will give the same honest service to all the people of the Foyle area if he is elected to the Assembly. He is a gentleman and a vote for him is a vote for honest representation in government.

“Maurice has proved over the years and during his term of Mayor of Londonderry that he is not only honest and hard working, but that he is capable and willing of representing all people from all backgrounds and is not afraid to speak out in favour of those of differing opinions when needed. He works for everybody and is particularly clued in to rural issues and is sensitive to the problems being faced by the farming community and those living in remote areas.

“As Independent Unionists we want to wish everyone well who puts their name forward; that is what a democracy is all about, everyone having their say and their opportunity and I want to make it quite clear, as we move towards the elections in May that the Independent Unionists support and uphold everyone’s right to stand for election and we will not be engaging in any negativity or scandalising anyone in the lead up to May 5. We wish everyone well and may the best candidate win.

“I would, however, appeal for people to exercise their democratic right to vote and to ensure they transfer their votes, so that those elected accurately reflect the wishes of all of society.

“If elected Maurice will be campaigning heavily for all communities and in particular for improvements to the roads network, for the upgrading of broadband and introduction of fibreoptic cables to help bring all areas up to the same levels as the city, and he will also be championing the cause of health and education in the north west, as well as petitioning for the fair spread of public service jobs, so that the people of the wider Londonderry area have fair and equitable access to technology, transport networks and vocational and academic and training which will benefit the whole north west area.”
