Top UK TV and film director to work in city
THE man behind popular TV hits ‘Spooks,’ ‘New Tricks’ and ‘Wired’ will direct The Playhouse’s first production during UK City of Culture 2013.
BAFTA award winning film and TV director Kenny Glenaan has come on board to direct a brand new play by multi award winning writer Seamas Keenan, ‘Over the Wire’.
The new play, which will run at The Playhouse from Monday, January 14 to Saturday, January 19, tells the story of five men in the aftermath of the burning of Long Kesh.
The prisoners, many of them sporting injuries, have erected shelters in which to sleep and avoid the cold of winter.
They have lost all their personal possessions in the fire - their clothes, family mementoes, food. Now, in an assortment of ill fitting rags salvaged from the wreckage, they resemble Dickensian refugees.
To pass the dead hours the men banter, have sing songs, tell gallows’s jokes, spoof about women, remember their teenage years, and reveal secrets to each other, as they seek to bolster their courage.
The powerful play is the latest by writer Seamas Keenan, winner of the Best Short Film at Noirin Film Festival 2002, Emerging Fiction Award, Hennessy Literary awards 2003, and New Irish Writer of the Year, Hennessy Fiction Awards, 2003.
A formidable local cast has been announced for the groundbreaking production, including Martin Bradley, Jim Lecky, Michael McDaid, Andy Doherty, Geoff Coke and Pat Lynch.
“We are so excited to have Kenny, Seamas and this fabulous local cast on board for the wonderful journey this city has begun” Pauline Ross at The Playhouse said.
“The Playhouse has proposed a very full and vibrant programme of theatre productions to the Culture Company 2013, and we’re delighted to have for their support for such a unique first class production, it’s the perfect way to kick off the wonderful year ahead!”
