Steel stolen from Londonderry rail works
A WATERSIDE councillor has condemned the theft of a trolley of steel plates from the construction site for the upgrade of the railway line between Londonderry and Belfast.
SDLP Councillor Martin Reilly said: “Any theft of metal is to be condemned but this incident is particularly concerning given the urgent need to see the upgrade of the Derry railway line completed on time in April for the City of Culture year.
“Indeed, earlier this month I had asked the Department for Regional Development for an update on how this much-need upgrade was progressing.”
He said it had been pleasing to learn from Translink that work was progressing well and that the line should re-open on schedule in April.
“Those responsible for this theft are putting their own self interests ahead of those of the city.
“Given that this theft occurred on Saturday afternoon in broad daylight I would hope that some witnesses may be able to come forward with information to the PSNI so that those responsible can be brought to justice.
“Anyone with information should contact the police or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
