Promoting life skills ‘on our doorstep’

A FOUR week neighbourhood health improvement initiative scheme has enhanced vital self-esteem and confidence skills amongst the young people involved in it, says Limavady Health Development Officer Eimear Teague.

“The project used a range of facilities in the Limavady Borough to develop life skills on our doorstep,” she said.

Young people from community associations in the Glens and Keady Way joined together to participate in a range of activities. The project finished last week with good feedback from those involved.

“The neighbourhood health improvement project team are delighted to be in a position to roll out schemes like this, and give local communities ownership of what they want to deliver to their youth,” said Eimear.

“Opportunities for developing vital life skills in young people are easily accessible in the Limavady area and the community associations involved pitched in with volunteers to make this particular project a huge success. It’s a collective effort and it makes a real difference to those involved.”

Places like Benone beach and the Roe Valley Country Park hosted a range of events including surfing, canoeing, indoor climbing and orienteering.

Overcoming fear and tackling things head on were just two of the skills developed on the course, said Danielle Kealey, a youth volunteer with the Glens Community Association.

“I think the people who took part all got something from the course and participation levels were good throughout,” she said.
