Mobile science lab visits High School
EDUCATION was brought to life by a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) module which visited Limavady High School recently.
Four groups of pupils were able to enjoy one and a half hour sessions using state of the art microscopes and getting a completely different perspective on everyday objects and samples of living organisms. They were able to see incredibly detailed images of insects and parasites produced by a scanning electron microscope. It was an excellent opportunity for pupils to put into practice theory they had learned in the classroom and to use the kind of sophisticated equipment which is found in diagnostic and research laboratories. This has also helped pupils to gain an idea of the range of career opportunities which exist in this field and contributed to the programme of promotion of STEM subjects as a route to future employment within the careers department.
The module is a mobile laboratory and workshop designed to bring high quality learning experiences in STEM subjects to pupils around the country. It is funded by the Department of Education and the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment from the Innovation Fund. It supports the STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) initiative spearheaded by the Government which recognises that STEM will be at the heart of any growing economy of the future.
