Embrace volunteering in the New Year

Limavady Volunteer Centre has thrown down the gauntlet to the community to take up volunteering as their New Year Resolution.
At present Limavady Community Development Initiative project has nearly 1,000 volunteers on its books, with volunteers placed in organisations throughout the Borough.
Development Initiative vice chairman, Raymond Wright, stressed the importance of volunteering: “Volunteers are an integral part of community development. The success of LCDI as one of Northern Ireland’s most innovative charities is not only attributable to the 70 full-time staff, but in no small part also to the more than 40 volunteers placed there. The LCDI is living proof of the power of volunteering.”
Acting Centre Manager, Gladys Thompson said that January was traditionally the time when many people might consider Volunteering for the first time.
“People volunteer for different reasons, it is a great way to meet local people in your local area, to engage with your local communities, get involved in local community projects, to increase your chances of getting paid employment, to sample different career options and most importantly to gain enjoyment and fulfilment from knowing that you are doing something worthwhile,” she said.
“We have opportunities in driving, working with children, working with the elderly, charity shops, community development, administration, and opportunities for handymen,” she said.

Those who do take the plunge and become a volunteer will, upon registration be supported by the centre staff not only when it comes to finding a placement, but will be supported throughout their placement and even afterwards.
“There are so many opportunities available to people of all ages to make a difference in their local community. You can give as much or as little time as you like,” said Ms Thompson, adding: “Some people volunteer for an hour each week, others for 20 hours. The bottom line is that every hour of your time is valued and appreciated. So, if you would like to make Volunteering your New Year’s resolution we would like to hear from you.”
