616 listed buildings in Londonderrry and Limavady
LONDONDERRY and Limavady have between them fewer listed buildings than much smaller council areas such as Down or Newry and Mourne, Environment Minister Alex Attwood has revealed.
He had been asked by DUP MLA Peter Weir “to detail the number of listed buildings in each constituency.”
The Minister responded to say that his department “does not hold information on listed buildings on a constituency basis, and it would require a major administrative exercise in order to collate this data. Information is collected and recorded by district council area.”
He provided a breakdown of the number in each council area, with the figures showing that there are just 476 listed buildings in Londonderry, which is one of the largest councils in Northern Ireland.
This compares to 718 in the Down council area or 701 in the Newry and Mourne council area.
In Limavady, one of the smallest councils in Northern Ireland, there are 140 listed buildings. In Belfast there are 1,079 listed buildings, in the Armagh area which contains one of the most historically significant towns in Ireland there are 529 and in the nearby towns of Coleraine and Strabane there are 328 and 165 respectively.
Across Northern Ireland, there are 8,548 listed buildings of various grades of importance.
