Pupils in community clean up

Pupils from four local primary schools in the Derry~Londonderry area swapped their books for bin bags recently, taking part in a community clean up as part of the Housing Executive's Junior Warden Project.

Children from Newbuildings Primary School, St Paul’s Primary School, Ebrington Primary School and Sacred Heart Primary School collected bags of discarded rubbish to help improve the appearance of the neighbouring streets.

The clean-ups were organised as part of the Junior Warden Project co-ordinated by the Housing Executive’s Social Education Officer, Patrick Duddy.

The children were joined on the day by the council’s Community Safety Wardens who are facilitating classroom discussions with the Junior Wardens as part of the overall project.

Around 145 schoolchildren are taking part in this year’s Junior Warden Project with initiatives running in the four local schools over the past month.

In addition to the clean-up the kids will take part in anti-social behaviour talks, an ASB poster competition, environmental activities, civic pride tours, and a photography project that will culminate with an exhibition in the playhouse at the end of the school year.

Housing Executive Social Education Officer, Patrick Duddy, said: “We always find that community clean ups are a great way to get the kids involved in taking care of their own area.

“They get to make a visible difference and see how quickly individual pieces of litter can accumulate into numerous bags worth of litter.”
