Former St Columb’s College pupil, Northern Ireland midfielder, double European cup-winner and current Republic of Ireland manager, Martin O’Neill, has offended some people with a joke about footballers’ wives and girlfriends (WAGs).

The County Londonderry man was asked if ‘WAGS’ would be allowed into the Republic of Ireland team hotel during the European Championships in France.

He deadpanned: “It depends on how good-looking the girls are.

“If they’re really attractive, they’re very, very welcome. The uglier ones, I’m afraid not.”

The comments met criticism online.
