Many carers don’t realise they are carers
MANY Londonderry folk provide care role for a loved one but don’t recognise themselves as carers, according to the Western Trust’s carers co-ordinator Cathy Magowan.
According to the most recent Census 2011 the number of people in an informal caring role in Northern Ireland has risen by 16 per cent, but this is thought to be an under estimate.
Ms Magowan said: “Many people across Northern Ireland provide a caring role for a loved one but don’t recognise themselves as a carer.
“Often they see themselves as a mother, father, son, daughter, wife, husband, brother or sister whose role it is to help and support a family member.
“A carer is someone who provides regular and substantial care for a family member, friend or neighbour who is disabled, ill or old and frail.”
To support carers the Western Trust is running two events in March 2013 to raise awareness and identify hidden carers.
The events will offer carers the opportunity to avail of a range of health checks, a taster complimentary therapy and information which will help support them in their caring role.
Said Ms Magowan: “A carer carries out this role in an unpaid capacity. I would enourage anyone who is Carer to come along and feel supported in their role – these events really do make a difference!”
The first event is on Friday, March 8, 2013, 10.30am - 1pm in St Columb’s Park House.
