Londonderry woman Sister Claire Theresa Crockett has been tragically killed following a devastating earthquake in Ecuador.

The local nun was among three people who died when the accommodation of the Hogar de la Madra order collapsed in Playa Prieta on Sunday.

The order confirmed this morning: “The bodies of the missing Sister and girls have been found amongst the rubble a few hours ago.

“We ask for prayers for their souls, so that they may soon be in God’s presence, seeing Him face to face.

“We also ask for prayers for their families, so that the Lord may bring a greater good of their suffering.”

Earlier, the order had posted: “We ask for urgent prayers. There has been a major earthquake in Ecuador. The house of our Sisters in Playa Prieta has fallen in.”

Friends paid tribute on the Hogar de la Madra Facebook Page.

Sharon Doran posted: “Rest in peace Clare and send love and strength to all of your family. Can’t express how much you will be missed and words cant explain how incredible you were.”

Rachel Meenan wrote: “Such sad news..rest in peace Clare..u were always a true star & will be missed..thoughts & prayers with all your family.”
