Showoff climbed city centre Christmas tree

A suspended jail sentence was imposed at Londonderry Magistrates' Court on a man who bared his bottom to passersby after he climbed the Christmas tree in the City Centre.

In the dock was Phillip O’Donnell (22), of Baldrick Crescent. He pleaded guilty to a charge of disorderly behaviour on January 9.

District Judge Barney McElholm was told that the city centre CCTV operators had made contact with the police after they saw O’Donnell climbing up the Christmas tree.

Having performed this feat, the court heard O’Donnell lowered his trousers and bared himself, ‘mooning’ at passers by.

When spoken to O’Donnell and he began to swear loudly at the police.

The court heard he was show boating for his friends and was behaving erratically and when he was warned about his behaviour he refused to stop and as a result was arrested.

Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott said his client had been very intoxicated that night.

He said O’Donnell had been showing off for his friends, but it was unacceptable behaviour.

The solicitor said his client would not be suitable for a Community Service Order because he was suffered from a chronic disorder and post traumatic stress disorder after a so-called ‘punishment shooting’.

District Judge McElholm imposed a four-month sentence, suspended for two years.
