'˜Mindless' arson attack on disabled woman's home

An arson attack on the Londonderry home of a woman living with the debilitating condition fibromyalgia appears to have been a 'mindless attack', according to a local councillor.

Katie Greer lives in the Nelson Drive area of the town. Her front door was almost set on fire in an arson attack earlier this week. Luckily, the door failed to light but severe scorch damage has been caused to her home.

Local DUP Councillor Drew Thompson has said there is no explanation as to why the attack was carried out. Katie Greer has also said she is in the dark about why her home was targeted. Her front door was almost set on fire some time between Sunday night and Monday afternoon.

Katie said: “I have no idea why my house would have been targeted in the first place.

“I was in my bed, I’ve got fibromyalgia. As soon as I opened my front door it was completely charred.”

“Everything in the porch and front door was burnt right up to my roof.

“It has made me feel really unsettled but I really like this area and I don’t want to have to move out of this area.”

DUP Councillor Drew Thompson said: “This could have happened to anyone. A number of people have been in touch with me with regards this incident to see if we have found out any reason but everything that has come to us at the minute has not led us any farther in terms of an explanation for why this has happened.

“My feeling at the moment is that this was a completely mindless attack. If that door was to catch fire properly we could be looking at a very tragic situation.

“That young girl is asking why anyone would do this but there does not seem to have been any reason for it whatsoever.

“If anyone knows anything about it at all, I would urge them to contact the police, contact Crimestoppers or even contact our office.”
