Londonderry dug deep atannual Archaeology Day

Londonderry dug deep for Archaeology Day at the weekend with a series of special events celebrating local history at the Guildhall.

Children experienced a series of fascinating historical challenges with an archaeological dig, archaeology information fair, tours and exhibits, living history re-enactments and a scavenger hunt.

Mayor, Hilary McClintock, said: “Archaeology Day is a really fun way of finding out more about how we discover, preserve and interpret the secrets of the past, piecing together the fragments which make up our history.”

The School of Irish Archaeology (SIA) facilitated a mock dig for children in Guildhall Square on Saturday, giving children a practical hands-on and fun experience allowing them to get to know what it’s like to be a real life Indiana Jones.

The replica Viking house excavation also gave children an opportunity to dig for treasures and artefacts while learning about our Viking ancestors.

Meanwhile, Kyleen Clarke, above, niece of Mabel Colhoun, unveiled Mabel’s lifetime collection at the Archaeology Day in the Guildhall.
