Gateway child safeguarding staff run for their money and hand over cheques to charity

The Western Health and Social Care Trust Family Intervention and Gateway Team in Londonderry took part in the Belfast marathon as part of a relay team in May this year as a team building exercise.

The team, who called themselves the ‘Gateway Getaways’, also raised money for two chosen charities.

£3,200 was raised in total with £1,600 being donated to CLIC Sargent who support children with cancer and their families and £1,600 to local charity Circle of Support who support children with autism and their families.

Karleen Taylor, Western Trust Social Work Manager and organiser of the event said: “It was great that this money would be able to make a difference for the charities chosen and also as part of the training it boosted team morale and spirit within the gateway team which was great.”

The Gateway Team is the first point of contact for people who are concerned about a child or young person.

It provides an immediate response to safeguard children in need of protection. Gateway social workers visit children, young people and their families in their own homes to assess their needs. Social workers liaise with other professionals involved with the family to ensure their views are included in the assessment.
