First Minister sad over Daly death

The First Minister, Arlene Foster and Deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness today expressed their sympathy at the death of retired Bishop of Derry Edward Daly.

First Minister, Arlene Foster said: “I was saddened to learn of the death of Bishop Edward Daly and my thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time.

“A native of Belleek in County Fermanagh Bishop Daly’s passing will be felt most acutely by those he served tirelessly for almost 40 years.

“Bishop Daly devoted his life to serving and helping others, quietly undertaking a wide range of charitable works in the local community.

“During the darker moments of our recent past Dr Daly made a significant contribution by arguing that violence should be rejected and by articulating a vision based on respect and tolerance.”

The Deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness said: “I am deeply saddened by the passing of Bishop Edward Daly and my thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

“He was a man of authentic faith and compassion and a tremendous force for good who dedicated his life to the service of others.

“Bishop Daly was a strong supporter of the peace process who spoke out strongly against injustice and violence and was very supportive to me personally in my role in the peace process and the development of the institutions.

“He was in tune with the local community and always worked for them which was particularly evident in his work at Foyle Hospice.

“The passing of Edward Daly is a great loss but his family can take great comfort for the unfailing support and service he gave to everyone he met.”
