Dean Morton praised for helping to bring city '˜closer together'

Dr Morton and his wife Rosemary were joined by parishioners and community leaders at his final service in St Columb’s Cathedral before his installation next Saturday as Dean of the national cathedral, St Patrick’s, Dublin.

Among the hundreds in attendance on Sunday to hear Dr Morton speak of the privilege of serving in the parish were the Lord Lieutenant of the City of Londonderry, Dr Angela Garvey; the Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District, Alderman Hilary McClintock, Foyle MP Mark Durkan and DUP MLA Gary Middleton.

Speaking afterwards, Mr Middleton said: “It was with great honour yet sadness that I attended St Columb’s Cathedral for the last service taken by The Very Reverend William Morton, the Dean of the St Columb’s Cathedral Londonderry.

“Dean Morton played a significant role over the past 20 years, both civically and religiously. There is no doubt that through the leadership shown by him and others, our city has grown closer together through greater understanding and compassion.

“I wish Dean Morton, Rosemary and family God’s richest blessings for their time ahead. They will be missed not only by the congregation, but by the wider community.”

At the service, a cross was dedicated in thanksgiving for those who lost their lives at the Battle of the Somme.
