Stroke ward hit by Norovirus-like bug
SIX patients and three staff in an Altnagelvin ward for stroke patients were reported as affected by a Norovirus-like vomiting and diarrhoea bug on Thursday.
The Western Health and Social Care Trust is asking for the cooperation of the public with increased infection control measures and is asking people not to visit patients in Altnagelvin Hospital if they have been feeling unwell themselves.
The ward was closed to admissions as an infection control measure.
Alan Corry Finn, Executive Director of Nursing and Director of Primary Care and Older Peoples Services said: “There are currently six patients and three staff affected in Ward 40. No new patients or staff are experiencing symptoms as of today.
He continued: “The Trust is aware of the reported increased incidence of Norovirus in the community. Staff are alert to this and remain vigilant. We would remind the public that they have an important role to play by not visiting any health care setting, hospital or care home, if they are feeling unwell themselves. If someone has been unwell we would advise them to wait at least 48 to 72 hours before visiting.
“Good hand hygiene is also very important when visiting a patient or relative. People should thoroughly wash their hands before and after visiting, for their own protection as well as for the prevention of the spread of infection.”
Visitors were asked to limit visiting to the designated times of between 3pm and 4pm and from 7pm until 8.30pm.
“We are asking relatives and friends of patients in hospital for their understanding and cooperation with the nursing staff with the arrangements which have been put in place in the interest of patients.”
