Sex attack black spots by ward named

TODAY the Sentinel reveals Londonderry’s sex attack black spots by ward and shows almost 40 sex assaults occurred in the Waterside out of 136 throughout the city during 2010/11, the last year for which figures are available (2010/11).

The paper can also reveal that there is a higher rate of sex offending in Londonderry than the Northern Ireland average.

In Londonderry there were 136 sexual offences recorded in 2010/11, a rate of 12.4 per 10,000 population; but in Northern Ireland as a whole there were 1933 offences recorded, a rate of 10.7 per 10,000 population.

And breaking down the figure neighbourhood by neighbourhood, whilst the highest number of sex offences (15) was recorded in the Strand ward - possibly due to the presence of the PSNI’s main station there - several Waterside wards also had high incidence rates during the year.

For example, figures obtained by the Sentinel show that the Altnagelvin (7), Ebrington (7) and Victoria (7) wards were collectively the scene of a considerable 21 recorded sex offences during that year.

Kilfennan (5), Lisnagelvin (5), Newbuildings (4) and Caw (4) also witnessed several sex attacks during the year as did Claudy, Clondermot, Banagher, Enagh, Eglinton and Holly Mount, although there were less than three assaults in each of the latter six wards.

Meanwhile, the highest rates on the cityside were in Strand (15), The Diamond - including the Fountain (9), Carnhill (7), Rosemount (7), Brandywell (5), Culmore (5), Westland (5) and Creggan Central (4) - 57 in total.

And there were less than three assaults in each of the rest of the wards on the cityside which includes Ballynashallog, Beechwood, Creggan South, Crevagh, Foyle Springs, Pennyburn, Shantallow East, Shantallow West and Springtown.
