Scam warning

Police in Londonoderry are urging members of the public to be vigilant following reports of a scam operating in the City.

Police received two reports of a man approaching people to sell them laptop computers and mobile phones.

On Tuesday, August 21, a man in his 50s was approached by an unknown male in a red car on Foyle Street who offered to sell him a Sony laptop, iPad, two iphones and a Samsung phone for a reduced cost. A sale was agreed and a sum of cash was handed over in return for a laptop case which was believed to hold the computer equipment and phones, however it was later found to contain only bottles of water.

On Tuesday, August 28, a woman in her 40s was in a computer store in the Crescent Link area when she was approached by an unknown male who offered to sell her a new laptop for a reduced price. He led the woman outside to a red car where another man in the car showed her a laptop and iphone. They agreed a price for the items but as the female victim did not have enough cash on her at the time, the men offered to drive her to an ATM machine on Spencer Road where she withdrew the money and gave it to the men who handed her a laptop case. The woman later found the case contained bottles of water.

The fraudsters are believed to use a red car, possibly a Renault Megane. One of the men is described as around 5’ 4” tall with a bald head and was wearing a waistcoat and short trousers.

Police are appealing to anyone who has any information to contact them at Strand Road Police station.
