PSNI probing INLA funeral

A PSNI officer has been appointed to investigate the firing of shots over the coffin of former Official IRA and INLA member Seamus Coyle in Londonderry.

Justice Minister David Ford said he was made aware of paramilitary activity during the funeral shortly after it occurred on April 17.

The funeral was attended by members of both nationalist parties - Sinn Féin and the SDLP.

Now a PSNI investigating officer has been appointed to look into the matter.

TUV MLA Jim Allister asked Mr Ford whether he has “sought a report on the paramilitary activity, including the firing of a rifle, at the funeral of Seamus Coyle in Londonderry on April 17, 2012; and what action he expects to be taken and by whom.”

Mr Ford responded: “I was made aware of this incident shortly after it occurred. The policing response is an operational matter for the Chief Constable, and I understand that an Investigating Officer has been appointed.”
