No plans for Somme garden
TWO commemorative areas of reflection including one specifically relating to the Battle of the Somme are sufficient and there are no plans to create a further memorial, according to Finance Minister Sammy Wilson.
Traditional Unionist Voice (TUV) MLA Jim Allister asked the Minister if he will make arrangements for a permanent Garden of Remembrance in Stormont to commemorate people who died during the First World War He also suggested the garden could commemorate those who died in subsequent conflicts, including by later acts of terrorism.
Mr Allister said the garden would be appropriate given “the approach of the centenary of The Great War and the Battle of the Somme.”
But Mr Wilson said there were no plans for another memorial and that two areas of relection already exist.
Mr Wilson said: “There are two existing commemorative areas on the Stormont Estate which reflect on conflict, one of which relates specifically to the Battle of the Somme.
“There are no plans for the creation of a further memorial.”
