New Parkinson’s handbook available online

NEARLY 200 Parkinson’s sufferers in Londonderry can now access a new handbook for people living with the disease online.

SDLP MP Mark Durkan last week supported the launch of the new handbook at Westminster.

Since its launch he says his office has been contacted by a number of people interested to find out more about the publication.

The Advanced Parkinson’s Pathfinders Handbook was developed in collaboration between the European Parkinson’s Disease Association and healthcare company Abbott to help people know what they should expect as their disease progresses and to provide information and support on how to get the most out of life with Parkinson’s disease.

Mr Durkan said: “I am delighted to support the European Parkinson’s Disease Association and Abbott in raising awareness of this important condition.

“Around 185 people in Derry live with Parkinson’s disease. Practical guides, such as the Advanced Parkinson’s Pathfinders Handbook, provide a valuable information source so that people know what to expect and how to ask for help as their needs change.

“It’s also essential that people are able to access the right movement disorder specialist and services, because their needs will change. People with Parkinson’s disease deserve support every step of the way.”

The handbook can be accessed online via the website of the European Parkinson’s Disease Association here: http://www.epda.eu.com/publications/advanced-parkinsons-pathfinder.

A number of copies will also be made available at Mr Durkan’s Westminster office.
