A LONDONDERRY marine worker is one of nine people from the island of Ireland to have won a place on a US government sponsored study programme at Boston College.

Loughs Agency Development Officer, Andrew Sides, will spend ten days studying the marine economy - fishing, tourism, science, energy etc - in Massachusetts and Florida.

He said: “I am looking forward to the trip to the states - this is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the potential of the marine economy for the Carlingford and Foyle areas”.

Selection followed a formal application process concluding with a rigorous interview at the US Consulate.

The Loughs Agency has a remit for development of marine tourism in the border areas of Foyle and Carlingford - counties Donegal, Louth, Londonderry, Tyrone, Armagh and Down. The Agency also has a remit for development of marine aquaculture.

The programme includes seminars at Boston College, field study, site visits and networking with USA practitioners.

The focus will be on understanding the marine environment and the potential for its safe and sustainable economic development. As well as the economic potential, the environmental challenges of such development will be considered.

The Irish Institute extols an Agency place on the programme as “a significant accomplishment for you and your organisation”.

Andy’s professional work is focussed on the marine economy - in particular, marine tourism. He expects to benefit personally and professionally from the marine economy programme.

Furthermore, his role with the Loughs Agency will permit him to transfer learning from the programme to germane elements of the economic, environmental and social sectors in the Carlingford and Foyle areas.
