Man arrested on ‘suspicion of dissident republican activity’

A MAN has been arrested in Londonderry on “suspicion of dissident republican activity,” according to the PSNI.

The arrest follows a security alert in Maureen Avenue. The alert has now ended but police remained at the scene carrying out further examination on Tuesday morning (May 22).

A number of viable devices found at a property in the residential area have been made safe by ATO and have been taken away for further forensic examination. A number of residents remain out of their homes at this time.

A 30 year old man arrested on suspicion of dissident republican activity remains in custody helping police with their enquiries.

Foyle Area Commander Chief Inspector Garry Eaton said: “These viable devices were found in a flat, in the middle of a built up residential area whch could have caused significant damage or serious harm to local people. Evacuating the area casued disruption but our primary concern is to keep people safe and prevent injury to the public.”
