Learning Disability Service Framework launched
Making a real difference to the lives of people with a learning disability, their carers and their families is the focus of the new Learning Disability Service Framework.
Health Minister Edwin Poots today launched the Framework which aims to promote social inclusion, reduce inequalities in health and social wellbeing, and improve the quality of care.
Speaking at the Long Gallery, the Minister said: “Learning disability affects a significant number of people in Northern Ireland. It is a lifelong condition, usually present from birth, and many people require educational and social supports, as well as health and social care services, to help them live full, inclusive and fulfilling lives.
“I am delighted and indeed proud to be here today to launch the Learning Disability Service Framework. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you gathered here today for your contribution towards its development.
“This Framework will make a real difference to the lives of people with a learning disability, their carers and family.”
The Minister continued: “It sets out what people with a learning disability can expect in terms of care and support to meet their individual needs, and for carers and family it outlines what they can expect in terms of access to services and of their involvement as partners in the planning processes.
“Its implementation will assist commissioners and those with responsibility for the delivery of services in the statutory and independent sectors in achieving an integrated model of services and supports around the individual in line with the expectations of service users and their families.”
