Jail seizures down

THE number of contraband items seized at HMP Magilligan halved from 311 in 2010 to just 158 in 2011 although drugs, bongs, knives and booze were once again amongst the material seized by prison officers at the jail last year.

Justice Minister David Ford revealed there were 34 drugs seizures as well as eight seizures of drug related items and eight seizures of improvised smoking devices.

Other seizures included mobile phones (31); inappropriate posters/materials (14); games console/digiboxes (7); TVs (7); radios (7); blades/knives (6); and alcohol (4).

Last year prison officers recorded 158 contraband seizures in HMP Magilligan between February 2011 and February 2012 - down on 311 in 2010 and on 285 finds in 2009.

Mr Ford stated: “The finds are grouped according to type. Many of the items confiscated are not prohibited items but were in excess of entitlements.”
