Irish Street workshop to increase visibility of refugees
A WORKSHOP to increase visibility and understanding of refugees and asylum seekers living in Londonderry will take place in Irish Street on Thursday, November 22.
Community Relations Officer Sue Divin, said: “The aim of the workshops is to create more positive perceptions and to educate local community groups and advice providers about the experiences of Refugees and Asylum seekers living here and how our advice services and community groups can work to assist them.
“Refugees and Asylum Seekers make up a small proportion of our population. Often they are faced with social and practical barriers, which heighten the sense that they can sometimes exist as a somewhat invisible or misunderstood part of our communities.”
“It is hoped this workshop will also provide the means for signposting to practical advice and information which is available out there for Refugees and Asylum Seekers, and to draw upon how this can be improved.
The half day workshop is entitled ‘Here and Now’. It is facilitated by the Northern Ireland Council for Ethnic Minorities and Bryson House, to provide practical information on Refugees and Asylum Seekers.
The session will also explain what advice and support is available as well explaining the rights of Refugees and Asylum Seekers. It also aims to provide a better understanding of engaging and integrating minority groups into communities.
The course takes the form of an afternoon workshop on Thursday, November 22, 2012, from 1pm-4.30pm at the Shared Future Centre, (On the main road between Irish Street and Gobnascale).
Course includes light lunch. The closing date for registrations to the course is Friday, November 16, 2012. To register contact Laura Gibson at firstname.lastname@example.org or tel: 71365151 ext 8221.
