Internationally significant stone age excavation on display

EVIDENCE of a substantial Early Neolithic Stone Age site of international significance is currently on exhibit in Londonderry.

The Tower Museum has unveiled the new exhibition displaying significant Neolithic artefacts excavated at Thornhill from the mid 1990s, detailing how life would have been six thousand years ago.

“Thousands of artefacts were uncovered during the excavation including stone and axe fragments, quartz, flint and stone tools, beads, saddle querns and pottery fragments,” said Paul Logue, an archaeologist with the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA).

“These findings confirm evidence of a substantial Early Neolithic Stone Age village site of international significance.

“A greater understanding of the Neolithic period can now be examined due to these findings and a story can be constructed on the trading, conflict and farming practices of humankind in the city at this time.”

The Heritage and Museum Service in partnership with the Northern Ireland Environment Agency officially launched the exhibition on February 22, 2013 in the Tower Museum. www.derrycity.gov.uk/Museums/Heritage-and-Museum-Service
