Ilex to turn Fort George into 749 space park and ride

ILEX has applied for permission to convert a section of Fort George into a temporary park and ride 749 space car park.

The application is for “a temporary car park (749 spaces for park and ride) to include site regrading and access onto public road.”

Department of Social Development (DSD) plans to lease part of the Fort George military base in Londonderry to the North West Regional Science Park in 2013/14.

It was acquired by DSD in 2004 and transferred to the Londonderry urban regeneration company ILEX for redevelopment

A professional assessment conducted to support a major mixed use application for the site warned that due to its former use as a shipyard and military base traces of arsenic, asbestos, explosives and radioactive chemicals could potentially harm people and the environment.

Last April the Sentinel reported how the multimillion pound decontamination of Fort George had been delayed by many months - until January 2013 at the earliest. Tenders for the proposed clean-up are due for return this month.
