DERRY City Council has moved to squash rumours that the iconic Guildhall is not to reopen until September this year.

Fears surfaced prior to Christmas when it was rumoured that a further delay had been encountered, allegedly due to a contract for works on an aspect of the internal works falling through.

However, on Monday a spokesperson for Derry City Council said that work on Phase 2 of the Guildhall restoration project was “progressing well”.

The spokesperson stressed there was no hold up, adding: “It is anticipated that the building will reopen, as planned, in early June 2013.
