Former hunger striker slams cartographers for 'Derry' snub
FORMER hunger striker, Foyle Sinn Féin MLA Raymond McCartney has attacked the Ordnance Survey of Ireland for its preference for 'Londonderry' over 'Derry.'
He called for a new Ordnance Survey map of Ireland which refers only to 'Londonderry' to be amended.
Mr McCartney said: "The 'Detailed Map of Ireland' 1st Edition produced by Ordnance Survey Ireland names both the county and city of Derry as 'Londonderry'.
"I find it incredible that an Irish public body such as Ordnance Survey Ireland could ignore the name of Derry which is accepted by the Irish Government as the historic name of this city and county and has always reflected this position in all-of its references to the City.
"I have raised this matter directly with Ordnance Survey Ireland and the Minister to which they are responsible, Eamon Ryan TD and made it quite clear that I find it offensive to see a map produced by the National Mapping Agency which ignores the aspirations of the vast majority of Derry citizens who are proud of their Irish identity.
"I have asked for this situation to be rectified as a matter of urgency and trust that future editions of this map will be amended to ensure that they properly reflect the historical, cultural entitlements and wishes of the majority of the people of Derry."
